Hiroshima/Miyajima
March 25-27, 2000
Colleen and I enjoyed a Japanese vacation along the Seto Inland Sea. Hiroshima and Miyajima are well known for their beauty and peacefulness. Hiroshima, the site of the first atomic bomb, is a place to reflect on history. Peace park allows the visitor to see, hear and digest the tragic moments associated with the worst event in our world's lifetime. An island just off the coast of Hiroshima, Miyajima provides an exciting exploration of oceanside and mountaintops. One of the three most scenic spots in Japan, Miyajima has something for every tourist.

Monkey atop Mt. Misen
The highest point on Miyajima held a surprise. Monkeys and deer freely roamed the forest. This wild monkey was obviously looking for a handout!
Itsukushima Shrine
This gate leading to the shrine is positioned in the sea bed. During the day, the illusion of a floating gate is seen when the tide is up. This evening picture depicts the orange gate when the tide has lowered and the local oyster crop is ready to be plucked from the mucky ground.
The decent of Mt. Misen
After being told that the cable car was malfunctioning, Colleen and I strolled down the mountain, pausing at this scenic river to snap a photo.
